The mother of a PSEO student is speaking out after North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) promoted a sex education seminar and drag performance to her 17-year-old son.
Throughout the fall 2025 semester, NHCC has partnered with a “gender queer” therapist who is “neurodivergent” and uses they/them pronouns to put on a multi-part sex education seminar for students called “Sex Ed You Wish You Had: Beyond the Basics.”
That therapist, Dan Piñon, is a licensed counselor who runs Alma Counseling Services and specializes in “complex grief, neurodivergence, burnout, relational trauma, family of origin wounds, somatic based practices, and identity exploration.”
A screenshot of the “Sex Ed You Wish You Had” registration form says Piñon’s focus will be to “provide a supportive space that centers the real-life experiences of queer, trans, BIPOC, disabled, fat, kinky, and non-monogamous individuals.”
The form also says the seminars will “explore topics like anatomy, STIs, consent, pleasure, porn, body image, sensory issues and sex, communication and more — all through a trauma-informed and inclusive lens.”
On top of this, NHCC’s Diversity Department recently hosted a drag queen named “Lala Luzious” for an “LGBTQ+ History Month” event that included “a presentation on the history of drag and a special performance!”
Both events were promoted in emails issued by the school, and one mother who spoke to Alpha News said she is not happy to see what is being promoted to her 17-year-old child who is enrolled in a NHCC class.
The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said her son takes an online course at the community college via the Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program. PSEO allows 10th, 11th, and 12th graders to take college courses and receive dual credit.
While the mother who spoke to Alpha News is thankful her son is able to learn more about the trades because of PSEO, she said the sex education seminar being promoted to her 17-year-old son is unacceptable.
“I was disgusted to see this type of ‘sexual education’ being promoted by our local community college,” she said. “When we decided to pursue PSEO classes, we were not expecting our child to be lured into a series of sex ed classes to learn about kink and porn, or offered an on-campus drag performance, by the Dean of Student Development.”
“It is wrong to think that we need to ‘affirm’ this type of sexual behavior in order to give our young people a positive impression of sexuality,” she added.
North Hennepin Community College responds
A spokesperson for NHCC told Alpha News that the school offers “a variety of optional programs that reflect the broad interests and backgrounds of our student body,” and “events such as ‘Sex Ed You Wish You Had: Beyond the Basics’ and LGBTQ+ History Month were designed to provide voluntary, age-appropriate educational opportunities.”
Further, the school said the two programs are “led by qualified professionals” and NHCC communicates its campus activities “to all students, including those in the Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program, in accordance with applicable guidelines.”
“We recognize that families may hold differing views on campus programming and encourage open dialogue between students and their families regarding participation in optional events. NHCC values transparency and remains focused on providing high-quality education and meaningful engagement opportunities for all students,” added the school.
Alpha News reached out to Piñon for this story but did not hear back.
