Why is the federal government coming after Texas?

Not Such a Dream

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Texas on Wednesday to block the Texas Dream Act, signed by former Governor Rick Perry in 2001, which allows undocumented students who graduated from Texas high schools to pay in-state tuition rates at public colleges and universities, provided they meet residency, academic, and registration requirements.

The DOJ says the state law violates federal law by offering benefits to undocumented immigrants that are not offered to U.S. citizens, conflicting with the U.S. Constitution’s supremacy clause. The lawsuit was prompted by two executive orders from President Donald Trump: “Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Open Borders” and “Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens.”

Hours after the lawsuit was filed, Texas officials agreed to comply with federal law and end the program — probably because the state Senate had already advanced TX SB1798 to repeal the Texas Dream Act.

On behalf of other Texas taxpayers, may we simply say: Thank you, Attorney General Ken Paxton! May more states follow suit. It’s literally insane that foreign students who entered our nation illegally can get in-state tuition, but American citizens from New Mexico or Alabama or any other place must pay twice as much. And it’s a scandal that this remains the case in many U.S. states. Does citizenship mean anything anymore? If President Trump has his way, maybe it will.

BREAKING: After filing a joint motion with the Trump Administration, I successfully stopped a law that unconstitutionally provided in-state tuition to illegal aliens.

Ending this un-American provision is a major victory for Texas. https://t.co/lDVjkOlcmU

But there’s more to this story, as one X commentator points out:

The federal government shouldn’t have had to sue Texas to end this. Greg Abbott and the Texas legislature should have ended this years ago. https://t.co/BGTNpKX76c

It is surprising that they didn’t.

No More Milk in the Ocean

The Trump administration has acted to strip from a Navy ship the name of Harvey Milk — the nation’s first openly gay elected official, who had a penchant for young men with substance abuse problems and was friends with the Rev. Jim Jones. The U.S.N.S. Harvey Milk got its name in July 2016 from former Navy Secretary Ray Mabus — but the Milk has run dry, thanks to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

And the once-influential National Review isn’t happy about that. Not one little bit.

Harvey Milk Was a Patriot And A Gay Conservative For Much Of His Life. Why Is The Pentagon Removing His Name From A Ship? A petty and “low rent” move by Secretary Hegseth. https://t.co/8jffIN13vN

According to CBS News:

Following his confirmation in January, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a directive instructing the Pentagon and U.S. military services to cease hosting events tied to heritage or awareness months, citing concerns that such programs could undermine unity within the ranks. The “Identity Months Dead at DoD” guidance banned official manpower and resources from being used on such events — among them, Pride Month, Black History Month and Women’s History Month….

The memo said the renaming of naval ships was to realign the U.S. military with Trump administration priorities of “reestablishing the warrior culture.”

The documents call for Navy Secretary John Phelan to select a new name for the USNS Harvey Milk on Tuesday, with the notice of the name change going out to other senior U.S. Navy officials later in the week after undergoing legal review.

Be honest, which fact here surprises you more — that the U.S. military named a ship for a man who had sex with a 16-year-old boy when he was 33, or that National Review is still in business?

Taking Pride

As a poorly named ship sails away, so does the celebration of “pride” for defying God. On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that President Donald Trump has no plans to issue a “Pride Month” proclamation, emphasizing his commitment to all Americans regardless of race, religion, or sexual preference.

This marks a dramatic shift from the Biden administration, which actively celebrated “Pride Month” with annual proclamations and events, including a White House celebration in 2023 where a transgender activist behaved disgracefully. Biden’s presidency pushed LGBT policies, such as expanding access to gender-change procedures, though last year he said he opposed those surgeries being performed on minors.

In contrast, Trump has focused on protecting children from gender-change procedures and preventing men from competing in women’s sports, as outlined in an executive order aimed at restoring “biological truth” in federal policy. The Education Department also declared June to be “Title IX Month” to mark the 53rd anniversary of the legislation protecting against sex-based discrimination in education.

By prohibiting sex-based discrimination in federally funded programs, #TitleIX opened countless athletic & academic opportunities for women & girls across the country.
