DEI

While President Donald Trump works to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs at the federal level, Gov. Tim Walz is digging in his heels.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) recently listed a job posting for an “inclusion and engagement supervisor” — a position paying up to $113,000 annually — to lead antiracism trainings, manage internal DEI operations, and oversee efforts to infuse “equity and inclusion” across every corner of the agency.

According to the state’s internal job posting, the new supervisor will direct staff in the Office for Equity and Inclusion, ensure agency-wide trainings are carried out, and develop “policies, internal operations and an organizational culture that are equitable and inclusive of input from employees, advocates and clients from underrepresented communities.”

Although the role is classified as “work-out-of-class” — a temporary assignment typically filled by an existing employee with supervisor approval — it still pays the equivalent of $78,509 to $113,086 annually for the three-month period.

State employees say they are ‘flooded’ with DEI training events

While Walz’s administration ramps up its DEI hiring, whistleblowers from inside DHS say the ideology is already inescapable.

Screenshots from internal documents back up the claim.

“The Strategic Anti-Racism Team (StART) was formed in 2020 to advise the Chief Equity Officer and the Commissioner on how to help the Department of Human Services become a fully inclusive, anti-racist, multicultural organization,” one DHS briefing states.

“The process will include agencywide anti-racism training … intentional efforts to eliminate systemic racism … [and] revising racist policies, practices and decision-making processes.”

Another DHS screenshot explains the department’s “Orientation to Antiracism” training:

“A key component of the agency’s antiracism work … redesigned into a new four-and-one-half-hour course that discusses the orientation to race and racism. DHS has made a commitment to becoming an antiracism organization, with a goal that every employee at DHS attend this training in 2022.”

DHS has also outlined a slate of June learning sessions centered on “LGBTQIA2S+” identities, including one on June 5 called, “Supporting Trans, Nonbinary and Queer Youth from Unsupportive Environments.”

“Explore what you can do to be a safe, supportive space and what it means to be an actionable ally. You may save a life,” the description reads.

Other scheduled events include: Moving Beyond the Binary: Gender Identity and Pronouns,” on June 18 that is designed to help employees “better connect with people of all genders.”

On June 26, there is a training called, “Supporting Trans, Nonbinary and Queer Colleagues,” citing the Human Rights Campaign’s 2023 “State of Emergency” for LGBTQIA2S+ Americans.
