President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have been in office just a little over one month. What they have accomplished in that time is truly remarkable, especially when it comes to the values people of faith cherish.
Christians should be cheering the Trump/Vance administration and doing everything we can to promote their accomplishments.
Life
On the sanctity of life, it is important to remember that Trump accomplished what no previous Republican president had been able to do – he got Roe v. Wade overturned! The three pro-life individuals he appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court ended the fiction that a “right” to abortion is hidden somewhere in our Constitution. Donald Trump delivered the biggest pro-life victory in 50 years!
In just the first month of his second term, he has already taken several steps to promote a culture of life in America.
Immediately after taking office, Trump ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to shut down a government website promoting abortion.
In January, Vance spoke to the crowd at the annual March for Life in person. He not only made the case for the sanctity of life — he urged young people to get married and have children. His proud promotion of the family is a message America needs to hear more often.
Trump also addressed the March for Life, though via video rather than in person. After his remarks, he signed executive orders reinstating the Hyde Amendment and the Mexico City Policy, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are not subsidizing abortions in the United States or overseas.
Trump pardoned nearly two dozen pro-life activists who were persecuted and imprisoned by the Biden Justice Department. He also ordered the Justice Department to drop pending cases against other pro-life activists, and nominated pro-life Pam Bondi to be attorney general. She was recently confirmed.
The Trump administration ended the Pentagon’s abortion travel funding program that Joe Biden created in order to evade pro-life state laws.
Trump appointed pro-life Sen. Marco Rubio to be Secretary of State; he has also been confirmed and is already making waves. Rubio rejoined the Geneva Consensus Declaration, which states there is no international right to abortion and no nation is obligated to fund or promote the practice. This was an important step in rolling back the Biden administration’s promotion of abortion as a top concern in U.S. foreign policy.
The White House issued a statement supporting legislation in Congress that would ensure proper medical care for babies who survive botched abortions. The legislation passed the House but was defeated by a Democrat filibuster in the Senate.
Newly confirmed HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy, Jr., has pledged to support Trump’s pro-life policies, and in that process, will soon be conducting a study on the safety of abortion pills. Trump also appointed pro-life officials to lead other key health agencies, including Drs. David Weldon at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Marty Makary at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Transgender Issues
The Trump/Vance administration has also moved quickly to address another issue that is critically important to Christians and parents across the country – radical transgender ideology.
Trump issued an executive order directing the government to recognize the biological reality that there are only two genders – male and female. He also directed government agencies to remove “gender-affirming care” for minors from the Affordable Care Act and from federal employee benefits.
Rubio ordered U.S. embassies to fly the American flag only — meaning no more LGBTQ flags. Bondi withdrew the federal government from a lawsuit initiated by the Biden Justice Department seeking to overturn Tennessee’s law protecting children from transgender medical procedures.
New Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner issued orders for all HUD-funded programs to operate based on biological sex, not gender identity – and that means keeping men out of women’s shelters.
Trump issued an executive order declaring gender dysphoria to be incompatible with military service. Newly confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth banned the enlistment of transgender individuals and stopped the Pentagon from paying for sex-change operations.
The president eliminated federal funding to hospitals that issue sterilizing drugs and perform surgeries that mutilate gender-confused children. He also cut federal funding to schools that promote transgender ideology and issued an order banning males pretending to be females from participating in women’s sports.
Trump’s actions are not just symbolic. He’s serious.
At a recent White House meeting with the nation’s governors, the president specifically called out Maine Gov. Janet Mills for refusing to comply with his order banning boys from cheating in girls’ sports.
“You better do it, because you’re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don’t,” he said. When Mills responded, “See you in court,” Trump quipped, “I look forward to that. That should be a real easy one. And enjoy your life after governor, because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”
History in the Making
In addition Trump reinstituted the White House Faith Office, which reports directly to him. The Faith Office will work to promote religious liberty and combat antisemitism. It will also work with the DOJ to eliminate anti-Christian bias within the federal government.
Lastly, Trump took action to protect the freedom of speech and end government censorship – an issue which is paramount to its fellow First Amendment Right, the freedom of religion. You cannot have religious freedom without free speech. Sadly, as Vance noted recently, this fundamental freedom is increasingly under attack in many Western nations, including the United States.
I have worked in Washington, D.C., my entire adult life, including all eight years of Ronald Reagan’s administration. Even though his style and rhetoric may occasionally irritate Christians, I can say without any hesitation that President Donald Trump is the greatest friend and champion American Christians have had in modern history.
I believe God saved Donald Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July for such a time as this. God is giving us a chance to save our country.
Gary L. Bauer is the president of American Values and senior vice president for public policy at the James Dobson Family Institute. He served in the Reagan administration as Under Secretary of Education and Chief Domestic Policy Advisor. He is the former president of the Family Research Council and served on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom from 2018 to 2020.
