U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has issued a temporary injunction preventing the release of a report by special counsel Jack Smith concerning his investigation into classified documents linked to President-elect Donald Trump.
This decision delays the report’s publication until at least three days after the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals rules on a related appeal from Trump co-defendants Waltine Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, who claim the report’s release would cause “irreparable harm.”
Cannon’s order emphasizes the need to maintain the current situation until the appellate court provides further guidance.
The case centers on allegations that Trump improperly retained sensitive government materials after leaving office, which led to a DOJ investigation and a subsequent federal indictment against him.
“To prevent irreparable harm arising from the circumstances as described in the current record in this emergency posture, and to permit an orderly and deliberative sequence of events, it is ORDERED AND ADJUDGED,” Cannon wrote.
