The first draft of the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies represents the work of the standards review committee. This group consists of 44 members, including K-12 teachers, administrators, college faculty, informal educators, and community members. This draft of the standards represents a dramatic shift in and modification of the approach to standards and social studies learning.
These academic standards are intended to set the expectations for achievement in social studies for K-12 students in the state. The Minnesota Department of Education defines social studies as “the interdisciplinary study of citizenship and government, economics, geography, history, and other disciplines in the social sciences and humanities.”
